In a conversation earlier this year with Jim Sibley, we both agreed that many of our weblog thoughts were really unfit for public consumption (and the risk of public referral). Due largely to our ability as writers, much of the context necessary to decipher our posts was simply absent to those who did not know us. However, we both continued to value weblogs for their archiving qualities and the opportunity to string together thought (for personal reasons rather than public).
This led us to propose that an ideal alternative to our current blogs would be a blog incorporating circles of trust. The general public gets the marketing face. Casual acquaintances get the professional face, perhaps with one or two 'in jokes'. Close friends and colleagues (and competitors?) have access to raw notes, thoughts and current Works in Progress. Of course all of this assumes that the Author has time to write content (which is a HUGE assumption).
