Narrowcasting 101: post presentation thoughts

The Narrowcasting presentation on Sept 8th attracted a handful of enthusiastic, thoughtful participants who debated the inherent problems associated with 'Even More Information" to contend with in the age of podcasts and videoblogs. Will practices like 'tagging' coupled with improved searches and the explicit trust relationships emerging in social sofware applications help us cope with the mountains of data we sort through on a daily basis?
Check out the archive of the session (conducted in Breeze Live) and the session description (just below ;-)).

Narrowcasting 101 Presentation, Sept 8th, 2005 12noon EDT

NarrowCasting 101: Using Blogs, Podcasts and Videoblogs in Higher Education

Presenter: Cyprien Lomas, UBC and Nick Noakes, HKUST

The practices involved in "narrowcasting," including Web logs(blogs), podcasts, and videoblogs, have become significant elementsof the new Web. These practices are emerging on our universities andschools, employing RSS feeds and aggregators to distributeincreasingly rich "amateur" content.

Join Cyprien Lomas and Nick Noakes to explore the vibrant and rapidlyevolving world of narrowcasting and the impact it can have onteaching and learning. They will explore several facets ofnarrowcasting and the new Web, including:
*       What is narrowcasting? Where did it come from and where is itgoing?
*       How might narrowcasting fit into a campus e-portfolio orcontent management system?
*       What are the implications of having increasingly media-rich(and resource-intensive) content on campus?
*       How can we filter and focus all of this new content?
[Please note: This will be very similar to the Educause eLive event we ran in Jul]

Next Horizon VCOP Meeting Jul 27 noon EDT

Our next Horizon VCOP meeting will be a presentation on Wed Jul 27 at noon EDT. Details below:

Title: Avoiding Self-Delusion: New Technologies and Expectation Effects
Presenter: Ruben R. Puentedura, Ph.D., President, Hippasus

One fine day you come into your office, and find everyone singing the praises of a new technology for the classroom - or perhaps complaining bitterly about it. The question in your mind is, though, is it solely the technology's pedagogical merits that are causing these reactions, or are there other factors at work? For instance, could novelty and the expectations that surround it be causing the observed results? Join us as we discuss how expectation effects can confound the evaluation of new classroom practices, how to improve your evaluation methods so as to clear away this fog, and how to apply this methodology to the upcoming technologies discussed in the Horizon Report.

When: Wed Jul 27 noon EDT [For your time zone: http://tinyurl.com/8qpwy ]

Where: iCohere Horizon web space [ http://www.conferences.iCohere.com/horizon ] and phone conference. If you want to invite colleagues to come along and they aren't members, please do. They can use the guest login to Horizon [user id = Horizon, password = guest] and we can fix them up with a permanent login after the meeting.

Next Horizon VCoP Meeting July 6 at noon EDT

The Next Horizon VCoP Meeting is set!

When: Wed Jul 6 noon EDT [For your time zone: http://tinyurl.com/acmhn ]

Where: iCohere Horizon web space and the phone bridge (1 877 944 2300). If you want to invite colleagues to come along and they aren't members, please request a guest ID from Cyprien clomas(at)educause.edu.

Topic: Building on our VCOP discussion at the NMC conference, what are the problems and barriers with incorporating emerging/new technologies and new literacies in your institution and what ways have you found of dealing with these?

Issues previously raised include:
- generational divide - GenY/Millennials/21st century skills
- cultural divide
- economic divide - haves & have nots
- differing motivations/interests: exceptionally motivated vs passive
- physical vs electronic (former wanted by students, or going to extremes)
- balancing differences

Out of this discussion, we will organize future sessions based on the
outcomes of our discussion.

The following meeting will be on Wed 27th Jul at noon EDT.

Look forward to seeing you all next week.

Mapping del.icio.us with Anthracite and OmniGraffle

Several people have asked me how I constructed the visualizations that I used in my talk on del.icio.us. My own approach involved a fair amount of hand-rolled custom code - not fun for people unaccustomed to writing their own software and working from the command line. So as to give non-programming-savvy researchers a chance to explore del.icio.us - or other online systems with implicit network structures - for themselves, I have put together a short guide on using two Mac OS X applications, Anthracite and OmniGraffle, for this purpose.

Comments and suggestions are welcome, either here or on my weblog.
