About the Horizon Project VCOP
The goal of the Horizon Project is to survey emerging technologies, trends and ideas to identify those that are likely to have an impact on higher education with a 1, 3, 5 year and beyond timeline. The project has adopted two approaches to pursue this goal.
The NMC Project Advisory board is made up of several strategically placed thinkers, visionaries, and scientists who are asked to reflect on future trends and emerging technologies. The results of these inquiries will be collected, modified and written up in the 2005 Horizon Report.
The Horizon Project Virtual Community of Practice (VCOP) take a more populist approach. We are hoping to attract individuals to our VCOP to talk about, identify, survey and hopefully assess emerging technologies. Members should be able to share their observations and experiences of technologies in use around them. One of the goals of the community is to generate several assessment type questions to evaluate the educational value (or potential) for any technology. Another goal is to communicate this to the appropriate people on our campuses, including CIOs, CAOs, Provosts, Presidents and other decision makers. Ideally the VCOP will evolve its own themes and goals.
We are looking for individuals who are experts in areas that are starting to emerge in higher education. One area is educational gaming; another is the use of collaborative visualisation tools. Within the VCOP, small groups of enthusiasts and experts will meet to discuss their favourite technologies and potential applications to higher education. Part of this discussion / presentation should address assessment (and possibly Return on Investment).
Other themes of interest within the VCOP include assessment, tools for personal expression
(hopefully to be incorporated by the groups of enthusiasts in their presentation) and innovative practices ;-). In addition to presentations, stories and examples of interesting uses of technology, possibly outside of higher education and perhaps in research, business or specialised communities are particularly valuable. These stories may take the form of digital stories, video clips, audio files and hopefully richer media.
