Secrets and Lies
Winner of the Golden Palm, Cannes, 1996, this is Mike Leigh's moving, tragicomic story about a young black woman who locates her (white) birth mother and forces her birth mother's family to come to terms with the various secrets and lies that have guided their lives. Like all Mike Leigh films it's deftly written and brilliantly acted by a wonderful ensemble cast.
